Origins and History Of The Sauna

While the sauna is thought to originate in Finland it has become very popular in different cultures all over the world. They are used not only for their health benefits but also for ceremonial and religious reasons.

The native Americans have a version of the sauna and refer to it as a sweat lodge. This lodge is typically dome shaped and made of all natural materials.

These buildings were prompted by European influences, and its corrupting effects on the native culture. With the European introduction of alcohol, and the inhumane treatment of the natives the need to re-purify and find their way back to the traditional ways became very important.

Now with the help of medicine men and woman, and the healing powers of the sweat lodge, they believed they could repair the damage done to their health as well as their mind.

The sweat lodge was a place for spiritual guidance, a place to get answers and needed wisdom from the creator and mother earth.

Different cultures use saunas for many reasons, be it religious, spiritual or healing of body and mind. The one thing that never changes is the health benefits of sauna use.

As far back as Roman times bathing has always been important. In fact the ancient Romans bathed every day in the hot steamy baths built over natural hot springs.

If fact many of these such baths were built and the public used them for a nominal fee. Some of the larger baths could accommodate up to 3000 people.

Then the Roman method of bathing spread with the expansion of their vast empire. And as it spread it began to change, evolve and grow. Now saunas are used all around the world and the list of their benefits continue to grow.

With the addition of the infrared saunas and the fact they have become portable, anyone and everyone can now own a personal sauna and reap all the marvelous benefits they have to offer.

Some Of The Differences Between Types Of Saunas

Last time I posted an article, I forgot to put the links in. So click this link to go to the primary page I forgot to link to before.

Now on with the Blog Post!

This week I posted a great article on some of the differences between different types of saunas. It's a pretty long article so if you visit it here http://saunarevolution.net/different-types-saunas/  you can read the entire thing.

Otherwise, here is a quick synopsis:

While there are numerous saunas available on the market today, the benefits of their use remains the same. Each type of sauna has it's own list of pros and cons.

The built in sauna for example can be an asset when selling your home. These saunas can either be built inside or out. The out side sauna being a little easier than an inside one.

For the outside sauna, several kits are available, but basically all you need is a small building with a bench and some form of heat. Most outdoor saunas use a small stove and wood heat, the sauna rocks heat up in a container on top of the stove, then you splash the water over them to create steam

An inside sauna is generally built in a spare room in the basement. Added care must be taken to ensure a protective moisture resistant barrier is properly installed to protect your home from mould and mildew damage, especially if you are installing a steam sauna. Kits for indoor steam saunas are also available.

Nowadays saunas have many different heating systems, and can be built for use with or without steam. The steam saunas are referred to as wet saunas the others are dry saunas.

Dry saunas have plenty of heating choices, wood while still popular is used mainly in the outdoor saunas. While inside the use of gas, electric or Far infrared is preferred, due to the wood type being a slight fire hazard.

No matter whether you choose a wet or dry sauna you will be doing your body a favour. Not only are saunas excellent at detoxifying your body, but also have numerous other health benefits.

Another benefit of your built in sauna would be the fact you can use the sauna whenever the mood strikes you. And you don't have to travel anywhere, as its available anytime right in your own home.
